The A.M. Best Company is an independent rating company that has evaluated insurance companies since 1899. It is a highly recognized rating company of the insurance industry and measures the financial condition and capacity of insurance companies to fulfill their obligations to their policyholders. The A.M. Best Company rates National Western Life A- (excellent). A.M. Best uses 15 rating categories, ranging from A++ to F.

The Standard and Poor's Company is another independent rating company with high international prestige. Standard and Poor's evaluates the claims paying ability of life insurance companies and has rated National Western Life A+ (good). Standard and Poor's ratings are divided into two broad categories, secure (AAA to BBB) and vulnerable (BB and Under).
